Happy New Year | January Goals

Welcome back to That’s What Pea Said
I hope you had a peaceful festive period and have entered 2020 feeling recharged and refreshed!

The new year can be an anxious and overwhelming time for many, with expectations to make changes and magically feel refreshed, with a new sense of purpose… Unfortunately this can often lead to feelings of self-doubt. Personally, I like to treat the new year as I do with every new month, create a couple of achievable goals and focus on self care and self-development which removes any additional pressure and anxiety.

In addition to this, I’m not a fan of the ‘new year, new me’ mindset as this suggests that you’re not good enough being the person which you currently are. I’m a big fan of self-growth and personal development but I believe the idea we need an annual overhaul can be detrimental to our mental health and wellbeing.

Throughout January, my key focus is on my Counselling studies as I have a portfolio deadline and an exam at the end of the month, to complete my Level 3 qualification. I honestly can’t believe how quickly this has come round although I’ll be glad to get it out of the way! In order to focus and give my studies my full attention I am going to ensure I practice self-care to keep my phsycial and mental health in tip-top condition.

In addition to this, I want to focus on my social media growth and predominently increase my engagement across all platforms. In order to achieve this, I have allocated time each day to comment on other blogs and engage with other users. I would also like to begin cross-publishing my content to ensure that it reaches a wider audience and therefore has a greater potentional, this is definetly a habit which I need to get into.

I like to consider myself a fairly conscious consumer, however throughout 2020 I would like to actively reduce the amount of items I purchase as I feel this has many benefits. Not only will I be saving money, but I’ll be working towards a more minimalist lifestyle. I doubt I’ll never-not be surrounded by comforts and decorations, thats where I’m happy however, I aim to be mindful of my purchases and to begin with, in January I will no longer be buying plastic bottles of drinks. This may take some planning (I’m always thirsty) but I have plenty of reusable bottles, so I just need to keep reminding myself of my goal so I can achieve it.

So, here we have my first three goals for 2020… I think they’re achieveable yet highly effective and I can continue to work on them throughout the year. I prefer goals which can be extended as I think they’re more beneficial in the long run! Have you set yourself any new goals? Do you prefer to focus on the short term, or the long term? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

I’d never thought of it before, but you’re right that making massive resolutions for the entire year can be daunting and may leave people feeling discouraged or doubtful. I love your idea of making goals for each month instead!

It’s nice to see a post of really achievable goals for a new year, or new month 😉 I’m actively trying to understand my relationship with minimalism more this year and further my want for less. Good luck in your studies!

I agree with not really being a fan of the new year, new me thing. To me it kind of takes away a lot of year round accountable. “Well, I’ll just act right in the new year.” No day but today, as they say, to start working on yourself!

Those are really great goals. I have also set goals just for January, I think it’s a good thing to break the year down into chunks and set new goals throughout the year, to build on previous ones. I do have an overall focus for 2020 though, which is I want to be more social and attend more social events. I also want to increase my social media and blog engagement too. Good luck with all your goals!

I love your goals for the year ahead, especially your desire to reduce the number of things you buy. I feel like more people should mirror that; it would drastically reduce clutter and trash. 🙂
